Their story begins in Geneva. In 1541 wearing different kinds of jewelry was forbidden, so craftsmen turned their attention to watches, lay the foundation to a new skill - horology. This led to creation of the first Watchmakers Guild in Geneva. At that time, no one knew that Swiss watch would become a quality standard of horology art in the world.

Centuries passed by. Swiss masters refined clockwork, invented new models. In the eighteenth century, Geneva was the largest watch manufacturer, it produced more than sixty thousand watches for export. During that period, they invented "timeless" watch, and then manual winding watch. Such innovations as a perpetual calendar and chronograph were invented in the nineteenth century. One of the most famous craftsmen of those times, Adrian Philippe, became a founder of such famous brand, as Patek Philippe.

In the early 20th century, mass watch production was started, and at the end of World War I the first versions of watches that were once widespread appeared. Who could think that watches would become so popular, as in today's world there are almost no people who would not wear or see watch.

To date, there are a huge number of manufacturers producing first-class watches, however, Swiss companies are recognized leaders in this area.

In addition, people often can see famous people (such as Michael Schumacher or Pierce Brosnan and Omega, Maria Sharapova and TAG Heuer) in watch advertising campaigns, and celebrities feel honored to be invited to advertise such brand.

When we hear the phrase "Swiss quality" - it causes in us not associations with chocolate or Swiss banks, but above all with watches, which are recognized a quality standard in watch industry worldwide.

While Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry is trying to implement new standards of Swiss Made marking, watch art historians decided to tell people about this mark of quality, and why its fineness must be fought.

Earlier, La Chaux-de-Fonds Time Int. Horological Museum opened an exhibition devoted to the origin and significance of Swiss Made logo. The exhibition shows the whole history of the labeling. As you know, manufacturers from Geneva were the first who hit upon the idea of placing overall sealing mark on timing mechanisms, and it happened in 1610. However, until the middle of the XIX century, such thing as "Swiss watch" did not exist ...

Swiss Made marking first appeared on mechanisms at the end of the century before. We wonder why it appeared in English writing, not typical for Switzerland. The thing is that Americans forced Swiss putting a national symbol on mechanisms.

In the mid-century they developed watch production, borrowed from Colt producing factories, - one of curators of the exhibition, Jean-Michel Piges, told. And watches, made from interchangeable parts, became a real competitive force to Swiss. To combat this, the latter had to come to grips with precision and wear resistance of mechanisms, which were opposed to Americans.

Therefore, for the first time, watch marked with Swiss Made inscription appeared in 1880 in the U.S. market. Only in the twentieth century, the marking moved from mechanisms at faces. "Manufacturers decided to retain English spelling, because it required less space, than French," - Jean-Michel Piges revealed the secret of legendary words emergence.
